Today’s Hint: Museums & Attractions Offer Mother’s Day Deals

May 7, 2015 By Hint Mama

For my first Mother’s Day a couple years back, my husband and I took our then 9-month-old daughter across the Golden Gate Bridge to the Bay Area Discovery Museum and then to lunch at my favorite taco place.

Admission to the children’s museum, however, wasn’t cheap – roughly $35 for the three of us. My mistake: We should have instead visited one of the many museums and attractions that offer free admission on Mother’s Day, but I didn’t know about such deals back then.

This is why today’s hint is a reminder to check out such deals, if an outing with the kids is on your Mother’s Day itinerary.

For instance, in San Francisco, where I live, the Exploratorium is offering a free day to all mothers and their families, while in Seattle, the Seattle Children’s Museum is waiving admission for Mom.

Elsewhere, in Tampa, the Museum of Science and Industry and the Tampa Museum of Art are offering free admission to mothers as is the Montgomery Zoo in Alabama. Other museums and attractions with similar Mother’s Day deals include the Terre Haute Children’s Museum in Indiana and the Roger Williams Park Museum of Natural History in Providence.

In fact, there’s a good chance at least one museum or site near you is offering such a deal, similar to how many museums offer Black Friday deals too. To be sure, if you don’t live near any of the attractions mentioned above, you’ll have to do a little bit of online digging to determine where admissions are being waived near you.

And of course, spending Mother’s Day at a museum, let alone a children’s museum, may not be what you have in mind for celebrating your special day. However, if such an activity is on the agenda for at least part of the day, the free-admission deals are worth taking advantage of.

What Mother’s Day freebies and deals have you come across? What does your ideal Mother’s Day involve?

Your local library is a good resource too. They have free or discounted passes for a lot of local museums, zoos, events, etc. They are available everyday, so you can plan a special day, like mother’s day, or just a random weekday when you get the urge to get the kids out of the house. My library’s website has print on demand for most places, so you can really plan these trips pretty much at the last minute.
